Kidney beans are very easy to grow, harvest, and cook with. They make a fun project to do with kids, as one seed pack will produce up to ten pounds of finished dry beans. Hardy 60cm (24″) bush plants produce copious inedible pods that stand up well to autumn rains. Inside each pod are five dark red kidney beans that can be cooked or saved for planting next season.

Kidney beans hail from Mexico and Central America, where they filled critical nutritional needs in the diet of the native peoples. Explorers and sailors also appreciated them for their dietary value, and because they could be stored for long periods of time. The traditional cuisine in Northern India uses red kidney beans, as well as food in the tradition of New Orleans
